You know, I see them young’uns jumpin’ up and down, tryin’ to get that ball in the hoop. Always wonder, just how high is that thing? Well, I done some lookin’ and I’m here to tell ya, it ain’t no easy feat. That NBA basketball hoop, it’s way up there! Ten feet high, they say. Ten feet! That’s taller than any man around here, I tell ya.
Now, I heard tell that the fella who made up this whole basketball thing, a Mr. Naismith, he’s the one who decided on ten feet. Seems like a long time ago. They say he wrote down all them rules, and ten feet is what he wrote. And you know what? They ain’t changed it since! Imagine that, all these years, same ol’ height. Stubborn, I call it.
And that’s the same for them college boys too, playin’ their games. Ten feet high for them. Even them fellas playin’ overseas, wherever that is. All of ’em, jumpin’ at that ten feet hoop. Makes a body tired just thinkin’ about it.

Now, for them younger ones, the little kids startin’ out, I hear they might lower it a bit. Eight feet, maybe nine feet. Makes sense, I reckon. Can’t have them little tykes tryin’ to reach way up there. Gotta give ’em a chance, right? But for NBA players, height of basketball hoop is always ten feet. It’s a tough game.
But once they get bigger, once they’re in high school or college, it’s back to ten feet. No exceptions. Gotta learn to jump high, I guess. That’s what they do all day, practicin’ their jumpin’ and their shootin’.
So, why ten feet? Well, I don’t rightly know. Seems like they coulda made it easier, maybe eight feet or nine feet for everybody. But that Mr. Naismith, he had his reasons, I suppose. But one thing’s for sure, it makes for a good game. Watchin’ them boys run and jump, tryin’ to get that ball in the hoop, it’s somethin’ to see. And you gotta admire their skill, reachin’ up that high. It’s a lot harder than it looks, I can tell ya that much.
I remember back in my day, we didn’t have no fancy hoops like that. We just threw a ball at a peach basket nailed to a tree. Didn’t matter how high it was, long as we had fun.
