Alright, let’s talk about this “unanimous decision” thing in boxing, you know, like when them fellas in the ring are punchin’ each other. I ain’t no fancy boxing expert, but I watch them fights on TV sometimes, the ones with all the flashin’ lights and the yelling.

So, from what I gather, a unanimous decision, or “you-nan-i-mous” as them city folks say, it’s like this: you got three judges sittin’ ringside, right? They got them scorecards and they’re watchin’ the whole fight, every jab and every uppercut. And when the fight’s over, they gotta decide who won. Now, a unanimous decision means all three of them judges, every single one, they all point to the same fella and say, “He won!” Ain’t no arguin’ about it, see? It’s like when you ask three folks if the sun is shinin’ and they all say, “Yep, it’s shinin’!”
It’s different from, say, when two judges pick one fella and the other judge picks the other fella. That ain’t unanimous. That’s what they call a “split decision,” like they split their minds or somethin’. And then there’s somethin’ called a “majority decision,” which I reckon is when two judges agree and one’s just kinda sittin’ there scratchin’ his head, maybe he went to the bathroom or somethin’. I dunno. But unanimous, that’s the real deal, that’s when everyone’s on the same page.
Why is it important? Well, I guess it means the win is clear, you know? No question about it. Like when you bake a pie and everyone says it’s the best darn pie they ever tasted, ain’t no room for doubt. It’s a clean win. The fella who gets that unanimous decision, he can hold his head high, knowin’ he whooped the other guy fair and square, at least in the eyes of them judges. And the other fella, well, he can’t really complain, can he? Three judges all said he lost, that’s gotta sting a bit.
- It means all judges agree.
- It’s a clear win.
- No room for argument.
Sometimes, you see a fight and you think, “Well, that was close!” But then, bam! Unanimous decision. And you’re left scratchin’ your head, thinkin’ maybe them judges saw somethin’ you didn’t. They are looking at points and all the technical stuff I don’t understand. They got their ways of figurin’ things out, I guess. They look at who landed more punches, who controlled the ring, who was more aggressive… all that fancy boxin’ stuff. Me? I just like to see a good scrap, as long as nobody gets hurt too bad.
Now, sometimes a fight ends with a knockout, right? Boom! One fella hits the other fella and he goes down and can’t get up. That ain’t a decision, that’s a knockout. Clear as day. But if they go the whole distance, all them rounds, then it’s up to them judges to make the call. And a unanimous decision is the best kind of call you can get, if you’re the winnin’ fella, that is.
So, that’s the long and short of it, as far as I can tell. Unanimous decision means everyone agrees who won. Simple as that. It ain’t rocket science, even an old lady like me can understand it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about boxing has got me hungry!

And just so we are clear, a knockout is different, you don’t need judges for that, it is clear who won. A technical knockout is also not decided by judges but it is when the referee stops the fight or a fighter cannot continue. Those are not unanimous decisions, those are just knockouts, see? Different things, all part of boxing but different.
So there you have it, my take on what a unanimous decision in boxing means. It ain’t perfect, but it’s the best I can do. I hope it helps you understand it a little better, and if not, well, go ask them fancy boxing commentators, they know all the big words and all.
