Alright, so you wanna know how many days ’til that football stuff starts, huh? The NFL, they call it. Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t rocket science.
When does this football thing start, anyway?

Okay, so I heard on the TV the other day, those fellas in their tight pants and helmets, they start playin’ around September. Yeah, September 5th, that’s what the man on the TV said. That’s when they kick off, they call it. Like kickin’ a ball, I guess. They play all the way till January, can you believe it? That’s a whole lotta football! January 5th, that’s when they finish up the regular games. Then they got them playoff games, start around January 11th. More football! I swear, these boys got nothin’ better to do!
So, how many days we talkin’ ’bout?
Now, see, that’s where it gets tricky. ‘Cause today is… well, I don’t rightly know what today is. But let’s just say, it’s sometime in, uh… let’s say July. Yeah, July sounds about right. If it’s July, and they start in September… that’s… well, that’s a month and a bit, ain’t it? Maybe two months? Lord, I ain’t good with numbers. My grandbaby, she’s good with numbers. Always tappin’ away on that phone of hers. She’d know.
But look here, someone told me the other day, it was only like 50 days or somethin’ until the football comes back. That was a few days ago, so maybe it’s a bit less now. Fifty days, that ain’t so long. Time flies, you know? One minute you’re plantin’ tomatoes, the next you’re watchin’ them fellas runnin’ around on the TV.
What’s this NFL all about, anyhow?
- They got teams, lots of ’em. Like, more teams than there are chickens in my yard, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
- They play these games, seventeen of ’em in a season, they say. Seems like a lot of runnin’ around to me.
- And they got this big game at the end, the Super Bowl. Everyone makes a big fuss about it. More fuss than a hen with one egg, I tell ya.
How do folks watch this football?

Well, you can watch it on the TV. They got these fellas who talk about the game, tell you what’s happenin’. Sometimes I understand what they sayin’, sometimes I don’t. They talk too fast. And there’s all them fancy graphics and replays. Makes my head spin, sometimes! But mostly, I just like to watch them boys run and jump. They’re strong, those boys.
And if you’re really into it, I hear you can even go to the games. You gotta get there early though, like, a couple of hours early. Gotta find a place to park your car, and then you gotta go through security. They check your bags and stuff. Can’t be bringin’ no chickens into the stadium, I guess.
So, to get back to your question…
Like I said, it’s hard to say exactly how many days are left. But it ain’t too long now. Just a matter of weeks. If you’re really itchin’ to know, ask one of them youngsters with their fancy phones. They know everything. Or just wait ’til you see them commercials on TV, with all the football players yellin’ and jumpin’ around. That’s how you know it’s almost time.
And if football ain’t your thing…
Well, there’s other stuff to watch, I guess. Someone told me about hockey the other day. Said it’s like football, but on ice. Can you imagine? Runnin’ around on ice! Those boys must be crazy. Or you can just go outside and enjoy the sunshine. That’s what I do. Football or no football, the sun still shines, and the chickens still need feedin’. And that’s all that matters, really.

But hey, if you want more football stuff, my grandbaby says there’s this place on the computer, “Reddit” she calls it. Says they got all sorts of things on there about football. I don’t know nothin’ about that, but she seems to like it. Maybe you will too. Just don’t spend too much time on that computer, you hear? Get some fresh air, eat your vegetables, and don’t worry too much about when them football games start. They’ll start when they start. And life will go on, just like it always does.
