Alright, so you wanna know about them NFL practice squad fellas, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it ain’t as fancy as them big-shot players on TV. These boys, they’re kinda like the backup singers, ya know? They ain’t in the spotlight, but they gotta be ready to jump in if somethin’ happens.
What do they do? Well, same kinda stuff as the main guys, mostly. They practice, they learn the plays, they run around like crazy. But come game day, they ain’t puttin’ on no fancy uniforms and runnin’ onto the field. Nope, they mostly watchin’ from the stands, or maybe on TV if it’s an away game. Unless, you know, somethin’ special happens, like they need an extra body for a practice on the road or if they are playing far away like in another country, then they might get to tag along. But usually, they just stay put.

- They practice a lot. Like, a whole lot.
- They gotta know all the plays, even the other team’s plays! They gotta pretend to be the other team during practice, so our guys know what to expect. It’s like playin’ pretend, but for grown men.
- They gotta be ready to go if one of the main players gets hurt. It’s like bein’ on standby, always waitin’ for the call.
Now, about this travelin’ business. Most of the time, these practice squad fellas, they don’t go travelin’ with the team for regular away games. They stay home, practice, and keep themselves ready. It’s a bummer for them, I bet. All them other guys gettin’ on planes and goin’ to fancy cities, and they stuck at home. But that’s the way it is. They ain’t allowed on the sidelines neither, gotta watch from somewhere inside the stadium. Can’t be too close to the action, I guess.
But, there are some special times when they do get to travel. Like, if the team’s goin’ on a real long trip, a few days maybe, or if they’re playin’ in a different country, then they might bring some practice squad guys along. It’s kinda like a bonus, a little reward for all that hard work. But it ain’t often, mind you.
And the money? Well, it ain’t millions like them star players, that’s for sure. But it ain’t chicken feed neither. They get paid by the week. I heard some get a decent amount if they’ve been around a while, others get a little less. It’s enough to keep ‘em goin’, I guess. Better than workin’ down at the feed store, that’s for sure.
Think of it this way, these practice squad fellas are like the understudies in a play. They gotta know all the lines, all the moves, just like the main actors. But they only get to go on stage if somethin’ happens to one of the stars. It ain’t glamorous, but it’s important. They keep the team sharp, they keep the starters on their toes, and they’re always there if someone needs to step in.
And let’s not forget, these practice squad guys, they ain’t stuck there forever. They can get signed by other teams, ya know? If another team sees somethin’ they like, they can snatch ’em up. It’s like a tryout, every day. They gotta work hard, prove themselves, and hope someone gives ’em a chance to shine. It ain’t easy, but that’s the life of a practice squad player. They’re always hustlin’, always tryin’ to get better, always hopin’ for a shot at the big time. That Paul Brown fella, he started this whole thing way back when. Smart fella, he was.
This year, they can have even more of these fellas on the practice squad, like 17 if one of ‘em is from that international program thing. Otherwise, they got 16 spots. That’s a lot of fellas just practicin’! But I guess they need ‘em. Football’s a rough game, lots of fellas gettin’ hurt. Gotta have backups ready to go.

So, that’s the lowdown on them practice squad players. They ain’t the stars, but they’re important. They work hard, they wait for their chance, and they keep the dream alive. And who knows, maybe one day they’ll get their shot at the big time. It happens, you know. Just gotta keep workin’ and hopin’.
