Alright, so listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about this football stuff, the kind them fellas play on TV. Heard some folks jabberin’ about “offensive offsides” in 2023. Sounds fancy, but it ain’t nothin’ but them fellas jumpin’ the gun before the ball moves. Like when your rooster crows ‘fore the sun’s even thinkin’ ’bout risin’.
Now, this year, seems like them refs got real picky about it. They blew that whistle for “offensive offsides” a whole 13 times! Can you believe that? Thirteen times them fellas messed up. I tell ya, back in my day, we just lined up and went at it. None of this fancy-pants “offsides” talk.

- What is this “offensive offsides” anyway? Well, it’s when one of them offensive fellas, the ones tryin’ to score, crosses that line ‘fore the ball is snapped. Like cheatin’ in a pie-eatin’ contest, but with more runnin’ and less pie.
They say last year and the year before that, they only called it, what, seven times total? This year, it’s like them refs got a new magnifying glass or somethin’. Specially them Philly fellas, the ones doin’ that “tush push” thing. Heard them refs caught ’em jumpin’ the gun a few times on that play. Them Chiefs boys too, they got called on it. One fella, Toney I think they called him, he was so far over that line, even my old eyes coulda seen it.
Now, they got all sorts of penalties in football, more than you can shake a stick at. Fifty or so, they say. Things like holdin’, pass interference, facemasks, and this “offsides” thing. But this year, seems like this “offensive offsides” is the one everyone’s yappin’ about.
I saw some numbers, looked like chicken scratch to me, but it showed somethin’ called “False Start” penalties happenin’ a whole bunch too. Over 600 times! And “Offensive Holding,” that happened even more! Guess them fellas like to grab and hold more than they like to follow the rules, huh? And they lose a whole lotta yards for doin’ it too, somethin’ like 11 or 19 yards each time.
They keep track of all these penalties, who got ’em and how many. Sounds like a whole lotta work for nothin’ if you ask me. But I guess it matters to them folks who bet on these games, or somethin’. They even got awards for the best rookies and players and such. But that ain’t got nothin’ to do with this “offsides” business.
Now, some folks are sayin’ that 13 times ain’t a lot, considerin’ they snap that ball thousands of times in a season. And maybe them refs tell the players to move back ‘fore they throw the flag sometimes. But 13 is more than seven, that’s for sure. And if you jump the gun, you jump the gun. Simple as that.
So, that’s the story on this “offensive offsides” in 2023. More whistles, more penalties, more fuss. Me? I just like watchin’ ’em run and hit each other. But I guess them rules are there for a reason, even if they don’t make much sense to an old woman like me.
