Alright, so you’re askin’ about them patches on them football shirts, eh? Them NFL fellas, always up to somethin’. Well, lemme tell ya what I’ve heard, best as I can remember it now.
First off, them captain fellas, the ones who yell a lot and point fingers, they get special patches. Been doin’ that since, oh, I dunno, maybe 2007 or so? Keeps track of who’s supposed to be bossin’ folks around on the field, I reckon. Each team, they got a few of ’em, not too many though, can’t have everyone thinkin’ they’re in charge, ya know?

Then there’s this other patch, looks like a fella all bundled up in a big ol’ coat. That’s for the “Man of the Year” fella. They give it to someone who’s a good player, but also a good person, ya know? Helps out the community and all that. It ain’t Walter Payton though I heard some folks sayin’ it was. It’s some other fella standin’ all alone. They been givin’ that award out since way back when, 1969 I think it was. It’s a nice thing, recognizin’ the good ones.
Now, this year, and maybe some other years too, they got them rainbow patches. Pretty colors, they are. But it ain’t just for show. It’s for folks who are sick with somethin’ called cancer. All sorts of cancers, not just one kind. They used to wear pink for the ladies with breast cancer, but now they got all them colors. Figured it was better to remember everyone who’s fightin’ that awful sickness, I suppose. Good on ’em, I say.
- Red for blood cancer, they say.
- And that lime green color is for somethin’ called Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Sounds fancy, but it’s just another bad kind of sick, I reckon.
And get this, on Thanksgiving, they wear special patches for a fella named Madden. He was a big deal in football, coachin’ and talkin’ about the games on TV. He passed away not too long ago, so they wear them patches to remember him. All the teams playin’ on Thanksgiving, they get them patches. That’s the Lions, the Bears, the Cowboys, the Giants, the Packers, and them Dolphins from Miami. They also got somethin’ on their helmets and even the coin they flip before the game has Mr. Madden on it. Seems like folks really liked this Madden fella.
Thanksgiving and Madden, they went together like peas and carrots, I tell ya. He was always there on TV, talkin’ about the game, makin’ it excitin’. So it’s nice they keep rememberin’ him every year. They even put his name on the field sometimes, big as ya please!
So there ya have it, that’s what I know about them patches. Captains, good fellas, sick folks, and that Madden fella. They all got their reasons, and it’s somethin’ the NFL does to show they care, I guess. Or maybe they just like sellin’ more shirts with them patches on ’em, who knows? Them fellas are always thinkin’ of somethin’.
