Alright, so you wanna be an NBA agent, huh? It ain’t easy, let me tell ya. First off, you gotta be smart. Not book smart necessarily, but street smart. You gotta know people, and you gotta know how to talk to ‘em.
Now, they say you need a degree. A four-year thing from some fancy college. That’s what them city folks say, anyway. Me, I never went to college. Didn’t need to. But if you wanna go the official route, yeah, you probably need that piece of paper. They say it helps, opens doors and such.

But listen here, a degree ain’t everything. You can have all the degrees in the world, but if you don’t know a basketball from a pumpkin, you ain’t gonna get far. You gotta know the game. You gotta know the players. You gotta know who’s who and what’s what.
So, how do you get to know these folks? Well, you gotta network. That’s just a fancy word for talkin’ to people. Go to games. Hang around where the players hang out. Be seen, be heard. But don’t be a pest, you hear? Nobody likes a pest.
And then there’s this NBPA thing. That’s the players’ association. They’re the ones who say who can be an agent and who can’t. You gotta apply to them, and they ain’t just lettin’ anyone in. They do background checks, make sure you ain’t a crook or somethin’. And you gotta pass a test, too. A test about rules and regulations and all that lawyer talk.
- First thing’s first, you gotta have a good head on your shoulders.
- Then, get that college paper if you can. It helps, they say.
- But more important than any paper is knowin’ the game and knowin’ the people.
- Network, network, network. Talk to folks. Make connections.
- And don’t forget about that NBPA application. Gotta get their okay.
They got this application you gotta fill out. And it ain’t just your name and address, no sir. They wanna know everything. Your work history, your education, even if you got arrested once for speedin’ back in ‘98. They dig deep, them folks.
And it ain’t cheap, neither. There’s fees to pay, tests to take, and all sorts of hoops to jump through. But if you really wanna do it, if you really wanna be an NBA agent, you gotta be willin’ to put in the work. And the money.
Now, some folks, they go the FIBA route, that’s the international basketball folks. But that’s a whole ‘nother story, and honestly, it sounds even more complicated than this NBA stuff. Stick to one thing at a time, I always say.

And listen, even after you get your license, even after you pass all the tests and pay all the fees, that’s just the beginning. You gotta find players to represent. And that ain’t easy. These players, they got folks crawlin’ all over ‘em, tryin’ to be their agent. You gotta stand out. You gotta be better than the rest. You gotta be someone they can trust.
Some folks say you gotta be like a lawyer, always readin’ contracts and negotiatin’ deals. Others say you gotta be like a friend, someone the players can lean on. Me? I think you gotta be a little bit of both. You gotta be tough, but you gotta be fair. You gotta be smart, but you gotta be honest.
So, yeah, becoming an NBA agent, it’s a tough road. But if you’re willin’ to work hard, if you’re willin’ to learn, and if you’re willin’ to put yourself out there, you might just make it. Just remember what I told ya, get that education if you can, know the game and the people, and don’t be afraid to hustle. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll be the next big shot agent, representin’ all them fancy basketball players.
