Alright, so I’ve been messing around with NBA 2K24 on my PS5 lately, and I wanted to see if I could get that sweet 120Hz action going. You know, for that buttery smooth gameplay. Here’s how it went down.
First off, I made sure my setup was even capable of handling 120Hz. You need a TV or monitor that supports it, otherwise, you’re stuck at 60Hz, no matter what you do. Thankfully, I have a TV that supports it.
Then, I booted up my PS5 and dove into the settings. I wanted to enable 120 FPS on my console. It’s pretty straightforward.
- I navigated to the “Screen and Video” section.
- Then I went into “Video Output.”
- I found the option for “Enable 120Hz Output” and turned it on.
With that done, I fired up NBA 2K24, excited to see the difference. And… well, it was a bit of a mixed bag. See, 2K24 is a bit weird about how it handles frame rates.
When I was just messing around in the single-player modes, like MyCareer or just playing a quick game, things felt noticeably smoother. The players moved more fluidly, dribbling looked sharper, and it just felt more responsive overall. It’s pretty clear that in these modes, the game was actually running at 120Hz, or at least close to it. It felt great, to be honest.
But here’s the kicker: when I hopped online to play against other people, it was like hitting a brick wall. The game felt sluggish, like it was back to 60Hz. And it turns out, that’s exactly what’s happening. From what I gathered online, 2K actually locks the online gameplay to 60Hz, no matter what your settings are. Pretty disappointing, if you ask me.
So, here’s my takeaway. If you’re mostly playing NBA 2K24 offline, you can definitely enjoy that 120Hz goodness, and it makes a noticeable difference in the gameplay. But, if you’re an online warrior, don’t expect any miracles. You’re stuck with 60Hz, like it or not. And I heard that PS4 players are locked at 1080p 30 FPS. I am not sure about Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch.
It’s a bit of a bummer that 2K doesn’t let us have 120Hz online, but hey, at least the single-player stuff is smooth. Hope this helps some of you out there trying to figure this whole 120Hz thing out with NBA 2K24! I tested it for many times and that’s all I found.
