Well, howdy there! You wanna know how many Mexicans are in the NFL, huh? It’s a bit of a tricky question, ain’t it? Not as many as you might think, considerin’ how many Mexicans and folks with Mexican roots are livin’ in this country.
Some folks say there ain’t many at all. I heard tell that back in 2019, there was only eight fellas out of over 1600 players who said they were Hispanic or Latino. That ain’t a whole lot, is it? Just a measly half a percent, they say. Then I heard another story, sayin’ in 2021 there was 12 players who said they were Latino. Still not a big number, is it?

Now, things might be lookin’ up a bit. Some other folks are sayin’ that there are more like 40 or so players with Latino backgrounds on NFL teams these days. That sounds a might better, but it still ain’t a whole lot when you think about it.
- It’s hard to get a real good count, you know?
- Some of these fellas might not be sayin’ out loud that they’re Mexican, or maybe they got Mexican blood but don’t really talk about it much.
- And then you gotta figure, some of them might be from Mexico, but others got family that’s been here in the States for a long time. It all gets kinda mixed up, ya see?
There’s this fella, Alfredo Gutierrez Urías, plays offensive tackle. He’s Mexican and he got into the NFL through some special program, the International Player Pathway Program, they call it. And then there was Mark Sanchez, played quarterback for the New York Jets. He’s Mexican too. So, there are some Mexican players out there, but it ain’t like they’re everywhere you look.
I reckon it’s a shame there ain’t more Mexican fellas playin’ football at that level. There sure are a lot of Mexican folks who love watchin’ the games. I heard tell there’s millions of NFL fans down in Mexico, and even more all over Latin America. They love their football just like we do! The NFL even has this Heritage Program thing, and I heard they had over 330 players in it last year, and some of them were foreign-born. And they say in 2023, 88 foreign-born players got to play in a game.
So, why ain’t there more Mexicans playin’? Well, that’s somethin’ I can’t rightly say. Maybe it’s just hard to make it to the NFL, no matter who you are or where you come from. It takes a lot of hard work and talent, and a whole lotta luck too. Maybe more young Mexican fellas need a chance to show what they can do. Maybe they need better schools and coaches and programs to help them get there.
Anyways, I hope that answers your question, even if it ain’t a real clear-cut answer. It’s like tryin’ to count chickens in a dust storm, you know? You might see a few, but you know there’s gotta be more somewhere, you just can’t quite get a good look at ’em all.
But one thing’s for sure, those Mexican players who do make it to the NFL, they’re somethin’ special. They’re representin’ their families and their communities, and they’re showin’ the world what they can do. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, no matter how you slice it. So let’s cheer ’em on, and hope to see more of ’em in the years to come!

And if you go lookin’ around, you might find some lists and such online that try to name all the Mexican players. I even heard there’s a whole category on some website just for Mexican fellas who play American football. Said they had 45 pages or somethin’. So, there’s more out there than you might think, but still not as many as you’d hope for.
