Well, let me tell ya, watchin’ them fellas punch each other on the TV, that’s somethin’ else, ain’t it? Does it make you better? I reckon it depends on what you mean by “better.”
Is it gonna make you a boxer just by watchin’? Heck no! You can’t learn to plow a field by starin’ at the tractor, can ya? It’s the same with boxin’. You gotta get in there, sweat a little, get punched a little, to really know what it’s about. I heard someone say, “Like all skills; fighting takes practice. Watching 10,000 hours of mma fights will prepare for a mma fight as much as watching 10.” Makes sense to me. Watchin’ alone ain’t gonna cut it.

But, watchin’ them fellas, it can get your blood pumpin’. It’s like when you see a good horse race, you get all excited, even if you ain’t the one ridin’. They say watching these fighting things “can trigger an adrenaline rush in viewers, similar to what athletes experience in the ring”. I guess that’s why my heart starts thumpin’ like a rabbit’s when them punches start flyin’.
- It gets you thinkin’ maybe. You see them boxin’ fellas, they’re quick, they’re strong, they gotta think fast. Maybe you start thinkin’ about your own life, you know? Maybe you think about gettin’ in shape, eatin’ better, movin’ around more. That’s gotta be good for ya.
- And it ain’t just about the fightin’ itself. Sometimes, after they beat the tar outta each other, them fellas shake hands, even hug sometimes. It’s what they call “sportsmanship”. Makes you think, even when things get tough, you gotta be respectful, you know? That’s somethin’ we could all use a little more of.
Now, some folks say boxin’ is good for your health. I ain’t no doctor, but I can see how it could be. All that jumpin’ around, punchin’ and dodgin’, gotta get your heart goin’. One time I heard a young fella say boxing can improve your “cardiovascular health”. Sounds fancy, but I reckon it just means your heart gets stronger. They also talk about things like “Fitness boxing” and “Shadow boxing focused on technique”, which sounds like good exercise to me. But just watchin’ it on TV ain’t gonna do that for ya. You gotta get off your behind and move around.
And let’s not forget, watchin’ boxin’, it can be a way to let off some steam. You ever have one of them days where you just wanna scream? Well, watchin’ them fellas punch each other, it’s like you’re doin’ the punchin’ yourself, kinda. I read somewhere they called this “emotional catharsis”. Big words for lettin’ off some steam, if you ask me. All that anger and frustration, it kinda goes away, at least for a little while. You see them fellas in the ring, and you think, “Well, at least my day ain’t that bad.”
So, does watchin’ boxin’ make you better? Maybe, maybe not. It ain’t gonna make you a fighter, that’s for sure. But it might get you thinkin’, get you movin’, and help you let off some steam. And in this crazy world, I reckon that’s somethin’. But remember, watchin’ is one thing, doin’ is another. If you really wanna get better, you gotta get up and do something yourself. Just like plantin’ a garden, you gotta get your hands dirty to see the flowers grow.
And another thing, these fellas in the ring, they train hard. They don’t just show up and start punchin’. They gotta be strong and fast and know what they’re doin’. So maybe, just maybe, watchin’ them can teach you a little somethin’ about hard work and dedication. But don’t just sit there like a bump on a log, get up and do somethin’ yourself!
