Okay, so the other day I was thinking, is tennis really just a summer thing? I mean, we see the big tournaments like Wimbledon and the US Open smack in the middle of summer, but can you only play it when it’s warm out?
I started by, you know, just hitting up Google. I typed in “is tennis a summer sport” and started scrolling. I saw a bunch of articles, and forum discussions.

Then, I decided to check out some local tennis courts near me. I wanted to see if people were actually playing, even though it’s not, like, peak summer right now. I drove by a couple of parks and, lo and behold, there were people out there! Some were bundled up a bit, sure, but they were definitely playing.
Indoor Courts are Game Changer
Next, I remembered about indoor tennis facilities. I’ve driven past a few before, but never really paid attention. So I looked up “indoor tennis courts near me” and found a couple of places that looked pretty legit.I gave one a call, just to see what the deal was. The person on the phone was super helpful. They told me they have leagues and lessons running year-round. Year-round! That pretty much answered my question right there.
Based on my little investigation, here is what I found:
- Outdoor Play: People definitely play tennis outdoors in all sorts of weather, as long as it’s not, pouring rain or snowing.
- Indoor Play: Indoor courts make tennis a year-round possibility, no matter what’s happening outside.
So, my conclusion? Tennis might be associated with summer, because of the big tournaments and the sunshine, but it’s totally not limited to summer. You can absolutely play tennis any time of year, which is pretty cool. I’m even thinking of taking some lessons myself now!
