Well, howdy there! You wanna learn how to whack that there tennis ball all by yer lonesome, huh? Alright, listen up, ‘cause I’m gonna tell ya how it’s done. It ain’t rocket science, but it takes a bit of gumption and a whole lotta sweat.
First off, you gotta get yerself a racket and some balls. Don’t go breakin’ the bank on fancy stuff neither. A good ol’ racket and a bucket of balls is all you need to get started. You can find ‘em cheap at them second-hand stores or maybe even borrow some from yer neighbor’s kid.

Now, the most important thing is gettin’ the feel of that racket in yer hand. Swing it around a bit, get comfortable with it. Imagine you’re hittin’ that ball right over the net, smack dab in the middle of the court. Pretend there is an opponent standin’ across the net, what angle do you want the ball to land at. Do that many times, you need to train your arm muscles, that’s what they all say.
- Forehand, backhand, it don’t matter. Just swing that thing like you mean it.
- Don’t be all stiff and jerky neither. Loosen up, let yer body flow with the swing.
- And keep yer eye on the ball! That’s what my grandson always says, keep yer eye on the ball, so I tell you the same, keep yer eye on the ball! It ain’t gonna hit itself, ya know.
Okay, so you got the swingin’ part down. Now you gotta find yerself a wall. Yep, a plain ol’ wall. A brick wall, a wooden wall, even the side of yer barn will do. That there wall is gonna be yer practice partner. Stand a good distance away from it, not too close, not too far. And start hittin’ that ball against the wall.
At first, you might be all over the place. The ball might go flyin’ every which way. Don’t you fret none. Just keep at it. The more you hit, the better you’ll get. You’ll start gettin’ a feel for how hard to hit the ball, how to aim it, how to control it. It’s all about practice, practice, practice.
And don’t just stand there in one spot like a fence post neither. Move yer feet! Tennis is all about footwork. You gotta be quick on yer feet, gotta be able to move around the court to get to the ball. So, practice shufflin’ yer feet, side to side, forward and back. Pretend like you’re dancin’ with that there wall, keepin’ up with the rhythm of the ball.
Now, if you wanna get fancy, you can set up some targets on that wall. Draw some circles with chalk, or tape up some paper plates. Then try to hit those targets. This will help you with yer aim and accuracy. And it’ll make it more fun too, like a game of darts but with a tennis ball and a wall. My grandson likes playing like that, he even puts up pictures and then tries to hit them.
Another thing you can do is practice yer serve. Find a nice open space, maybe in yer yard or down at the park. And just start servin’ those balls. Toss the ball up, swing that racket, and try to get the ball over an imaginary net. You don’t need no fancy net to practice yer serve. Just imagine one in yer head and aim for it.

And don’t forget about them volleys. Volleys are when you hit the ball before it bounces. You gotta be quick and nimble to hit a good volley. Stand close to the wall and have someone throw balls at you and practice hittin’ them back without lettin’ them bounce. If you don’t have someone to help, you can throw the ball at the wall at an upward angle and then try and volley the ball when it bounces off the wall. It takes a bit of practice, but you’ll get the hang of it.
Now, I know what you’re thinkin’. All this practice is well and good, but it ain’t the same as playin’ a real game, right? Well, you’re right about that. But there are ways to make it feel more like a real game even when you’re playin’ alone. You can get a ball machine that will throw tennis balls at you or practice with that wall. That way you don’t have to chase those balls all over the place yourself and get all tired out.
And most importantly, don’t get discouraged. Learning to play tennis takes time and patience. You ain’t gonna become Serena Williams overnight. But if you keep practicin’, keep workin’ at it, you’ll get better and better. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll be the one teachin’ other folks how to play.
So, there you have it. That’s how you play tennis alone, without no fuss, no muss. Just you, yer racket, a ball, and a whole lotta determination. Now get out there and start whacking’!
