Next, you need a bat. Now, a real baseball bat is good, sure. But shoot, we used to use all kinds of things. A good sturdy stick will work. Even a broom handle if you’re desperate! Just somethin’ you can swing and smack that ball with.
Then you gotta have some folks to play with. Two is enough, I reckon, but more is always better. Get your friends, your cousins, whoever. The more the merrier, as they say. And that way, playing backyard baseball becomes more fun. With more people, more fun!

Now, where you gonna play this game? Well, your backyard, of course! That’s why it’s called backyard baseball, silly! Don’t need a fancy field or nothin’. Just a patch of grass, or even dirt. We used to play in the street sometimes, but watch out for cars!
You gotta have bases, too. First base, second base, third base, and home plate. Now, you can use actual bases if you got ’em. But we just used whatever we could find. An old shirt for first, a rock for second, maybe a hat for third. And home plate? Could be anything! A piece of wood, a flattened cardboard box… Get creative!
Now, how do you play this here backyard baseball? Well, one fella pitches the ball. That means he throws it to the batter. The batter, that’s the one with the bat, tries to hit the ball. If he hits it, he runs to first base. If the ball hit the ground, someone in the field can catch it and throw to the baseman. If the baseman catch the ball before the batter arrive at the base, the batter is out. If the batter hit the ball out of the field without it being catch, that’s a home run. And he just run through all the bases. The batter also could be out if he swing the bat and miss the ball three times. This we call strike out.
Simple, right? And if the ball is flying high, someone catch it before it hit the ground, the batter is also out. We call that fly out. Then you keep going around the bases, tryin’ to get back home. That’s how you score a run. Whoever scores the most runs wins the game.

There ain’t too many rules in backyard baseball. You can make ’em up as you go along, really. That’s part of the fun. Like, maybe you say if the ball hits Mrs. Higgins’s prize-winning roses, it’s an automatic out. Or if you hit it over the fence, it’s a home run. Just agree on the rules before you start, so nobody gets into a huff.
