Okay, here’s my personal take on figuring out how much tennis coaches make. I got curious about this a while back, so I started digging around.
First, I scoured the internet. I mean, I went down a total rabbit hole. I looked at job postings, salary websites, and forums where tennis coaches hang out online.

What I quickly realized is that it’s a pretty wide range. There’s no simple answer. It’s like asking “how much does a car cost?” Well, are we talking about a used clunker or a brand-new sports car?
Checking Out the Numbers
- I checked some of those salary websites, like Payscale. They give you averages, which can be helpful as a starting point. Payscale said the average was something like $46,213 a year. Okay, that’s a decent baseline, I guess.
- But then, I started thinking about all the different types of coaching situations. You’ve got your local park district instructors, high school coaches, college coaches, and then the private coaches who work with serious players.
I have visited some famous tennis schools in my neighborhood. Their coaches’ income is definitely a secret. Nobody tells you about the income directly, so you have to find another way.
The Private Coach Factor
This is where things get interesting. From what I could gather, private coaches – especially those with a good reputation or who work with really talented players – can make a lot more than that average.
I figured it out this way: If a private coach charges, say, $50-100+ per hour (which seems pretty common), and they’re booked up with lessons, they’re raking it in! Think about it – even 20 hours of lessons a week at those rates adds up quickly.
Other Things That Matter
I also realized that location probably plays a big role. A coach in a wealthy area with lots of tennis clubs is likely to charge more and have more clients than a coach in a smaller town.
And, of course, experience and qualifications matter. A coach with tons of certifications and a proven track record of developing successful players can command a higher rate.

So, the bottom line? It’s hard to pinpoint an exact number. But from my little investigation, I’d say that a tennis coach’s income can range from “getting by” to “doing pretty darn well,” depending on a whole bunch of factors. It’s definitely a field where you can build your earnings over time if you’re good at what you do and you hustle!
