Alright, so you wanna know how much them boxing referees get paid, huh? Well, it ain’t no simple thing, let me tell ya. It’s like this, see? Them fellas who put on the boxing matches, the promoters they call ’em, they’re the ones who pay the referees. So, it ain’t like everybody gets the same amount. It changes, you know?
How Much Do They Get, Really?

I heard tell that some referees, just startin’ out maybe, they might only get a few hundred dollars, like 350 bucks or somethin’. And then there’s the other ones, the big shots who do the important matches, they can get a whole lot more. I’m talkin’ maybe a thousand, fifteen hundred dollars a match! That’s a pretty penny, ain’t it?
- Little matches: Maybe $350 – $1500
- Big important matches: Could be $5,000 all the way up to $25,000!
Now, you gotta understand, them real big fights, the ones everybody watches on TV, them referees, they get paid the big bucks. I heard tell some of ’em get ten thousand, even twenty-five thousand dollars for just one fight! Can you imagine? That’s more money than some folks see in a whole year!
And if it’s a super-duper important fight, like with them famous fellas, Mayweather or that Fury fella, why, the referee might get even more! Thirty thousand dollars, maybe even more than that! It’s crazy, I tell ya.
But It Ain’t Always That Much
Now, don’t go thinkin’ every referee is rollin’ in dough. Most of ’em ain’t gettin’ them huge paychecks. I read somewhere, maybe on the internet, that the average referee, he makes somethin’ like eighty thousand dollars a year. That’s still pretty good money, I guess, but it ain’t no thirty thousand dollars a night, you know?
And where you work matters too. Like, if you’re a referee in one of them big cities, like San Jose in California, you might make more. I heard tell they make over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year out there! But if you’re workin’ in smaller places, you probably ain’t gonna make that much.

Some Make a Lot, Some Don’t
They say the top referees, the best of the best, they can make a whole lot more. Maybe sixty thousand dollars a year, maybe even more. But them fellas are the lucky ones, you know? Most of ’em are just regular folks, tryin’ to make a livin’.
I even saw somethin’ about hourly pay. Said in Nevada, some referees get paid by the hour, like twenty-one dollars an hour. But that don’t sound right to me. How you gonna pay a referee by the hour? A boxing match ain’t got no set time, you know? It ends when it ends. But what do I know? I’m just an old woman.
Compared to Other Sports
Now, them football referees, them fellas in the NFL, they make a whole lot more. I heard tell one of ’em, Walt Anderson his name was, he was makin’ two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year! That’s a lot of money, even more than them top boxing referees. But football’s a bigger deal, I guess. More people watchin’, more money in it.
So, It All Depends

So, there you have it. How much a boxing referee makes depends on a lot of things. The size of the fight, how important it is, where it’s at, and how good the referee is. It ain’t no simple answer, see? But one thing’s for sure, some of them referees are makin’ some serious money. More than I ever made, that’s for darn sure!
And that’s about all I know about it. It ain’t easy money, that’s for sure. Them referees gotta be tough, gotta know the rules, gotta be able to make quick decisions. And they gotta put up with a lot of hollerin’ and yellin’ from the crowd and the fighters too. It ain’t a job for the faint of heart, I tell ya.
Anyways, hope that answered your question. It’s complicated, like I said, but that’s the way things are in this world. Some folks get rich, some folks just get by. And some folks stand in a boxing ring and get paid to make sure nobody gets killed. Go figure.
