Alright, let’s talk about this NFL injury money stuff. You know, when them fellas get banged up playin’ football. It ain’t always clear how much they get, but I’ll try to explain it like I understand it.
First off, you gotta know, these football players, they got contracts. Big ol’ papers with lots of numbers and fancy words. Some of them fellas, the real good ones, they get what they call “guaranteed” money. That means they get paid no matter what, even if they get hurt. But most of ’em, they ain’t so lucky.

So, what happens when a player gets hurt? Well, if it’s a regular season thing, and they gotta sit out a game or two, they usually still get somethin’. But it ain’t always the whole paycheck. It depends on what that contract says. Sometimes it’s just a little bit, you know, to tide ’em over.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Say a fella gets hurt bad, real bad, durin’ the preseason, before the games that really count. The team might decide they don’t wanna keep him around. Can’t blame ’em, I guess, football’s a business. But they can’t just toss him aside like an old shoe. They gotta pay him somethin’.
That’s what they call an “injury settlement.” It’s like a goodbye present, but it ain’t always much. The team figures out how long the fella’s gonna be laid up, and they pay him for that time. Plus, they gotta cover his doctor bills. It’s supposed to be fair, but you know how these things go.
- Example one time I heard, this player and team agreed on 33 dollars. I don’t know if it is 33 thousand or just 33 dollars, but they did agree on 33.
- Another time, I heard on the radio, something about a whole bunch of players suing the NFL, sayin’ they got brain problems from all them hits to the head. And the NFL, they paid out a whole heap of money, over three-quarters of a BILLION dollars. That’s a lot of zeroes, let me tell ya.
But don’t go thinkin’ every player gets rich off these settlements. Most of ’em don’t. Like I said, it depends on that contract. And it depends on how good the player is. The big stars, they got lawyers and agents who fight for ’em. But the regular fellas, they gotta take what they can get.
And how do they figure out the amount? Well, it ain’t somethin’ I can just pull out of a hat. It’s all hush-hush, behind closed doors. The team doctors look at the player, they talk to other doctors, and they come up with a number. And then the player and his agent, they gotta decide if it’s enough. Sometimes they fight for more, sometimes they just take it and move on. It is all a negotiation.
So, yeah, it’s complicated. There ain’t no easy answer to how much these fellas get. It could be a few thousand, it could be a few million. It all depends on the situation. But one thing’s for sure, playin’ football is a tough business. You put your body on the line, and sometimes you pay the price. And even when you get paid for an injury, it ain’t always enough to make up for what you lost.

If the player gets waived? This is when the team tells the league the player is hurt. Then other teams can take him, but they know he’s hurt. If no one takes him, he might get a little something.
This is just my understandin’ of it, mind you. I ain’t no lawyer or nothin’. But I been watchin’ football for a long time, and I seen a lot of players come and go. And I know one thing: money ain’t everything. Health is more important. So, I hope them fellas take care of themselves, on and off the field.
And that’s all I gotta say about that.
