Okay, so I was watching a Formula 1 race the other day, and it got me thinking – how many gears do these cars even have? I mean, they’re going so ridiculously fast, they must have a ton, right?
So, I started digging around. I figured it couldn’t be that hard to find. I went straight to the internet, obviously. I typed in “F1 car gears” into the search bar and hit enter.

First thing I found, it’s not as many gears as you might think! It turns out that Formula 1 cars have 8 forward gears. 8! Honestly, That’s all.
The Gear Details
- 8 Forward Gears: Yep, just eight. They’re fixed at the beginning of the season, but teams can tweak the ratios inside those gears.
- Plus Reverse: Oh, and they do have a reverse gear. I guess even F1 drivers need to back up sometimes, haha!
I learned that those gear ratios are super important. They gotta be perfect for each track. Too short, and you’re topping out too early. Too long, and you’re a slug off the line. It’s a whole balancing act.
So, there you have it. F1 cars: 8 forward gears, 1 reverse. It’s all about making the most of those 8 gears to go crazy fast. And I did this test by my self!
