Well, let me tell you, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout how many football fields make a mile. Sounds like a silly question, but I guess some city folks just don’t know these things. They use all sorts of fancy words, but it ain’t that hard to figure out.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I heard that a football field, you know, the American kind with all them lines, is about 100 yards long. And a mile, well, that’s a whole lot further. They say a mile is like 1760 yards. That’s a big number, ain’t it? So, if you got 100 yards in one football field, and you need 1760 yards for a mile…hmmm, you gotta do some dividin’.

It’s like, if one apple cost a nickel, how many apples can you get for a dollar? You gotta divide that dollar by the nickel, you get 20 apples. Same idea here, just with yards and miles. I heard someone say it’s like 5/88 or 1/18 of a mile. They like to use them fractions. I just know you need a bunch of football fields to make up a mile.
They say you gotta run like five or six times around a soccer field to make a mile. Now, that’s a different kind of field, ain’t it? Bigger, I reckon. Those soccer players, they sure can run. But we talkin’ ’bout football fields here.
If you count the end zones, those little areas at the end of the field, each one is like 10 yards. So, a whole football field, with the end zones, is more like 120 yards. So, if you count them end zones, then a football field is a little longer. And if the field is longer, you need fewer of ’em to make a mile. Makes sense, right?
So, if you use that bigger number, you know, with them end zones… I heard someone say it takes about 15 football fields to make a mile. 15! That’s a lot of fields. Just imagine layin’ them all out end to end. That’s a long walk!
- One football field is 100 yards long.
- A mile is 1760 yards.
- So you need many football fields to make one mile.
Someone was talking ’bout a square mile. Now that’s somethin’ else. They say a football field, the whole thing, is like 360 feet by 160 feet. Big rectangle. And that makes it 57,600 square feet. Don’t ask me what that means, just sounds like a whole lot of space.
And they were sayin’ somethin’ ’bout 5,280 feet in a mile. That’s another way to measure a mile, I guess. Feet, yards, miles… they got all kinds of ways to measure things. But I guess if you use feet, you can say there are about 14 or 15 football fields in a mile. Sounds about right, same as before.

I remember when we was kids, we’d run all over the place. Didn’t matter if it was a field or a road, we just ran. We didn’t think ’bout no miles or yards or nothin’. Just runnin’ till we was tired.
These city folks, they like to measure everything. How many football fields in a mile, how many steps to the grocery store, how many minutes till lunchtime. They measure it all. But you don’t need all them numbers to know a mile is a long way.
How many football fields can you fit in a square mile? That is a head scratcher. But a mile is a long way, whether you are measuring it in football fields or by how long it takes to get there. And that’s all that matters, right?
So next time you hear someone talkin’ ’bout how many football fields in a mile, you just tell ’em it’s a bunch. Around 15 or so, give or take. That’s all they need to know. A mile is a good long walk and it is about 15 football fields. If you are talking about running around a soccer field, then it is about 5 times.
