I was watching a tennis match the other day, and it got me thinking – how big is a tennis court, really? I mean, I’ve played a few times, but I never really paid attention to the exact size. So, I decided to do a little digging.
First, I grabbed my phone and opened up Google to see what I could find. It was kind of a mess, a bunch of different websites, all with numbers flying around.

Finding the Dimensions
I started looking up the standard dimensions for a tennis court. A few websites mentioned something about the International Tennis Federation (ITF) setting the rules, but who are those guys anyway? More searching. Apparently, they’re the big shots in the tennis world. Okay, good to know.
After going through the details, I found out that for doubles, the standard width of a tennis court is 36 feet. That’s it! Not too complicated after all. They also mentioned the length is 78 feet, but I was more curious about the width, especially since I usually play doubles.
What About the Area?
Then I started thinking, if I know the length and the width, I can probably figure out the total area. Simple math, right? Multiply the length by the width and boom, you’ve got the area.
So, I did the math: 78 feet times 36 feet. My phone calculator told me that’s 2,808 square feet. I wrote that down in my notebook, just to keep track.
Putting It All Together
So, there you have it. A standard tennis court for doubles is 36 feet wide. And the total area is about 2,808 square feet. It’s pretty interesting how these numbers come together, right? I mean, it’s not something you think about every day, but once you start digging, it’s kind of cool to know.
I guess the next time I’m on the court, I’ll have a better appreciation for the space we’re playing in. It is not just some random rectangle, it’s a carefully measured area. Who knew, right?
