Okay, so the other day, I was watching an NBA game with a buddy, and he asked me, “How long is a quarter in the NBA, anyway?” I realized I wasn’t 100% sure, so I figured, why not do a little digging and make sure I’ve got it straight? It’s one of those things you kinda think you know, but then…
First things first, I grabbed my phone and did a quick search. I mean, that’s the easiest way, right?

My Research Process
- Opened up my browser.
- Typed in “how long is an nba quarter”.
- Hit enter.
The search results popped up instantly. Loads of articles and stuff, but I just wanted the quick answer.
And there it was, plain as day: 12 minutes. Each quarter in an NBA game is 12 minutes long. Simple enough! But then I was curious about overtimes.
So, I scrolled a bit further down the search results, and I found out that overtime periods in the NBA are 5 minutes long. That’s good to know if a game goes into OT!
I even checked a couple of different websites, just to make sure I wasn’t getting bad info. They all said the same thing: 12 minutes for a regular quarter, 5 minutes for overtime. Boom! Now I’ve got it locked in my brain.
I closed the browser windows, feeling much more informed than I’d be a few mins before.
So, yeah, now I can confidently tell my friend (and anyone else) exactly how long an NBA quarter is. It’s always good to double-check these things, even if you think you know the answer!
