Well, lemme tell ya, this football scrimmage thing, it ain’t got no set time, ya hear? It’s like when you’re cookin’ a pot of beans – sometimes they’re done quick, sometimes they take a while. It all depends, it really does.
The coaches, them fellers are in charge. They decide how long these young’uns gonna be runnin’ around and bumpin’ into each other. Could be short, could be long, it’s all up to them.

Now, I heard tell some folks do it in quarters, like a real game. Some do halves, and some even do it in three parts, like, you know, thirds or somethin’. And the time for each part? Well, that’s up to them coaches too. But I ain’t never seen it go longer than 40 minutes for one part. That’d be too much, even for them young strong boys.
I also heard about soccer scrimmages being like, 100 minutes tops, and they can change players all they want. But football? Football’s different, see? It’s more about, well, bangin’ heads and seein’ who’s tougher, I reckon.
- Sometimes they just wanna practice certain plays, like, you know, if they need to work on that runnin’ thing or that passin’ thing. They call it “situation play,” I think. But both teams gotta agree on it, can’t just go doin’ whatever you want.
- And if one team’s had enough, they can just say so, and the other team gotta be polite and stop. That’s just good manners, you know? Like when you’re done eatin’ your pie, you don’t keep shovelin’ it in.
High school games, now those are somethin’ else. They got their own rules and such. Their scrimmages can be different too, depends on what the coach wants and what the rules say. Lots of things to think about, seems like.
Some folks say there’s a 60-minute limit for some scrimmages, and they take a long break in between, like a whole hour! That’s a long time to just sit around, I tell ya. I could get a whole lot of knittin’ done in that time. Maybe even bake a cake.
But the main thing to remember is, ain’t no hard and fast rule. It ain’t like bakin’ a cake where you gotta follow the recipe exactly, or it’ll be a mess. Football scrimmages, they’re more like… well, like a stew. You throw in what you got, and it cooks ’til it’s done.
The coaches, they look at their players, see how tired they are, see what they need to work on, and then they decide when to stop. It’s like when you’re workin’ in the garden – you work ’til you’re tired or ’til the sun goes down, whichever comes first.

So, if you’re askin’ me how long a football scrimmage lasts, I’m gonna tell you, “It lasts as long as it needs to.” Ain’t no other way to put it. It’s all about what them coaches want and what them players need. Just like life, I guess. You just keep goin’ ‘til you’re done.
And that, as they say, is that. Don’t go lookin’ for no fancy answers when a simple one will do. Football’s football, and a scrimmage is a scrimmage. It lasts ‘til it’s over.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got a pie to bake. And that, unlike a football scrimmage, does have a set time.
