Running back (RB/HB/FB) Running backs are players who line up behind the offensive line in a position to receive a hand-off from the quarterback and execute a rushing play. Anywhere from zero to three running backs may be utilized on a play (a formation with no running backs is often called an “empty backfield”).There are several positions in each football position grouping that are considered skill positions.
