Alright, so you’re wonderin’ if Utah’s got itself an NFL team, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t that simple. Folks ’round here, we love our sports, that’s for sure. But NFL? Not so much, not yet anyways.
See, we got the Utah Jazz, basketball fellas, real good ones too. And we got that Real Salt Lake soccer team, they kick the ball around pretty good. And now, they say we’re gonna get a hockey team, somethin’ called NHL, but I ain’t seen ’em yet.
Now, about that football… We got a big ol’ stadium, Rice-Eccles Stadium they call it. You go there on a Saturday, it’s packed! But it ain’t NFL, it’s college boys. And let me tell ya, them college boys play their hearts out. Sometimes I think they play harder than them fancy NFL fellas, but what do I know, I’m just an old woman.
They say there’s a whole bunch of boys from Utah playin’ in the NFL. Fifty-somethin’ of ’em, scattered all over the country. Young fellas, some just outta college, playin’ for all sorts of teams. So, we got the talent here, that’s for sure. But a whole team? In Utah? Nah, not yet.
- We got the Jazz (basketball)
- We got Real Salt Lake (soccer)
- We gonna get a NHL team (hockey they say)
- But no NFL (football fellas) yet
Back in the day, they moved the Jazz here from New Orleans. A fella named Battistone, he decided Utah was the place to be. And he was right, we love our Jazz. Been here since 1979, that’s a long time. We even had a baseball team for a while, the Buzz, and some other teams, the Starzz, the Freezz, the Blaze… Lots of names, come and gone. But no NFL.
Some folks talk about it, you know, gettin’ an NFL team here. They say the governor, Cox his name is, maybe he could do somethin’ about it. But it ain’t easy, I tell ya. Lots of money involved, lots of talkin’ and dealin’. And who knows if them NFL fellas even wanna come to Utah? We ain’t exactly a big city like New York or Los Angeles.
So, the long and short of it is, no, Utah don’t have an NFL team. But we got plenty of other sports to keep us busy. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll get them football fellas too. But for now, we’ll just keep cheerin’ on our college boys and them other teams we got. And that’s just fine by me.
It’s kinda funny, you know, all these teams with “Z”s in their names. Jazz, Freezz… Makes you wonder why. Maybe folks ’round here just like that letter. Or maybe it’s just a coincidence. Who knows? Like I said, I’m just an old woman.
But one thing’s for sure, we love our sports here in Utah. And we’re proud of our teams, no matter what league they play in. So, if you ever come visit, be sure to catch a game. You won’t be disappointed. Just don’t expect to see no NFL, not yet anyways.
