Well, let me tell you, this whole boxing thing, it’s rough. You see them young folks on the TV, punching each other. Makes my old bones ache just watching. They got all this fancy gear now, gloves and things. And this thing they call headgear. Does it really help in boxing, though? That’s what I’m wondering.
I heard some folks say it keeps you from getting all cut up and bruised. Makes sense, I guess. Nobody wants to be all bloody and swollen. Especially in that boxing. They say a cut can really mess you up in that sport. A cut, they say, is a big deal, important, they say. I don’t know about all that.

But does headgear really stop you from getting your brains rattled? I mean, you get punched in the head, that’s gonna shake things up inside, headgear or no headgear. It can not stop your brain from getting all messed up, concussions they call it. I heard some people talking, saying it does not protect much from punches. Your brain still moves around in your head, even with headgear on. Sounds messy. Headgear is mainly used to protect from things like cuts and bruises. I guess that is something.
They did some tests, you know, with machines and fake heads. Like them crash test dummies, but for boxing, I reckon. Punching machines and fake heads, mercy! They measure the force, whatever that means. They say the headgear don’t do much for the big punches. Just like I thought, that brain’s still gonna get jostled around.
- Headgear is for cuts and bruises, mostly.
- It probably won’t stop your brain from getting mixed up.
- Those boxing folks don’t wear it much anyway.
Now, they say these professional boxers, the big shots, they don’t use headgear. They banned it, whatever that means. And you know why? For the show! They say the folks watching, they like to see the blood and the bruises. Can you believe that? They wanna see these young folks get hurt. That’s entertainment, they call it. Well, it ain’t my kind of entertainment, I can tell you that.
They did more tests, with that machine again. They found out that headgear does not help much with ball-to-head hits. But, they say it can help with head-to-head bumps, like if two fellas bump heads. They say it helps by 33%, whatever that means. Sounds like a lot of numbers to me. But I guess it’s something. Better than nothing, maybe.
So, does headgear help in boxing? Well, it helps with the cuts and the bruises, I suppose. Keeps you looking a little prettier, maybe. But for the real hard punches, the ones that rattle your brain? I don’t think it does a whole lot. Just my two cents, you know. I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen a thing or two in my time.
These young folks today, they’re tough. But they ain’t as tough as they think they are. They get hit in the head too much, it’s gonna catch up with them. Headgear or no headgear. They should be careful, that’s all I’m saying. Boxing is a rough sport. It ain’t for the faint of heart. Or the faint of head, I guess you could say.

They got all these rules now, in boxing. Used to be, they just went at it. Now they got rounds and points and all that. And they got this headgear, sometimes. But it don’t change the fact that it’s a rough sport. A hard sport. A sport that can leave you hurting. Inside and out.
I remember back in the day, they didn’t have no headgear. They just fought. Bare knuckles, sometimes. Now that was a sight to see. Bloody and brutal. But it was honest, in a way. You knew what you were getting into. No fancy gear to protect you. Just your fists and your wits.
Nowadays, they got all this protection. Gloves and headgear and mouthpieces. But they still get hurt. They still get their brains rattled. So, I don’t know. Maybe it’s better this way. Maybe it’s not. All I know is, boxing is a tough sport. And headgear ain’t gonna change that. It ain’t gonna make it easy. It’s still gonna hurt. It’s still gonna be rough.
I guess the thing is to just be careful. Be smart. Don’t go getting your head punched in too much. Headgear or no headgear, that’s just common sense, ain’t it? And that’s all this old lady’s got to say about that. It ain’t good to get hit in the head, no matter what you are wearing, right?
