Okay, so I’ve been getting into softball lately, and I had this baseball glove lying around from when I was a kid. I thought, “Hey, can I just use this for softball too?” Turns out, it’s not that simple, so I did a little experiment to figure it out.
First off, I grabbed my old baseball glove and a softball. Right away, I noticed the softball barely fit in the pocket. It was a tight squeeze, and I could tell it wasn’t going to be easy to catch with it. Still, I headed out to the field to give it a try.

- I started with some easy throws. The ball kept popping out of the glove because the pocket was too small. It was frustrating, to say the least.
- Next, I tried catching some fly balls. This was even harder. The small pocket made it tough to secure the ball, and I dropped more than I caught.
- I even attempted to field some grounders. Nope, that didn’t work well either. The glove just wasn’t designed for the larger size of a softball.
After a while, I switched to a proper softball glove. What a difference! The bigger pocket made catching so much easier. It felt like the ball just settled right in there, nice and snug. Fly balls were no problem, and grounders were a breeze.
My conclusion
So, can you use a baseball glove for softball? Technically, yes. But should you? Probably not. It’s way harder to catch and field the ball, and you’ll probably end up more frustrated than anything else. Using a real softball glove designed for the bigger ball is definitely the way to go. It just makes the whole experience so much better.
Trust me, I learned that the hard way. Save yourself the trouble and get the right gear. You’ll thank me later!
