I’ve been hitting the gym lately, and I’ve really gotten into boxing. It’s a great way to let off some steam and get a good workout in. But I realized pretty quickly that I didn’t know jack about what kind of gloves to use. I mean, they all look the same to me!
So, I did what any self-respecting person would do – I turned to the internet. I started searching for “how many ounces for boxing gloves” and found a bunch of information. It was a bit overwhelming, to be honest, but I managed to piece together some useful stuff.

I learned that boxing gloves are measured by weight, using ounces. It’s not about the size of your hand, but rather how much padding is in the glove to protect your fist. This kind of makes sense to me. The more padding, the heavier the glove, and the more protection you have, but also you must be heavier when training or fighting.
- I found out that if you’re under 100 pounds, like a kid or something, you’d use 6-8 ounce gloves.
- For someone like me, who’s in the 100-125 pound range, 10-ounce gloves are the way to go.
- If you’re between 125-150 pounds, you’d want 12-ounce gloves.
- And for the bigger folks, 150-175 pounds, 14-ounce gloves are recommended.
My Choice
Since I’m around 120 pounds, I figured I should probably go with the 10-ounce gloves. So, I went to a sports store and tried some on. The guy there was pretty helpful, and he showed me how to measure my hand circumference to make sure I got the right fit. Basically, you wrap a measuring tape around your hand, just below your knuckles.
In the end, I bought a pair of 10-ounce gloves, and they feel pretty good. They’re snug but not too tight, and they offer a decent amount of padding. I’ve been using them for a few weeks now, and I haven’t had any issues with hand pain or anything. In short, I feel more powerful when I train or fight with my opponents. This makes me feel good, and I can go on with my training.
Overall, I’m glad I did some research before buying boxing gloves. It’s definitely worth taking the time to figure out what weight is right for you, so you can avoid injuries and get the most out of your workouts. And hey, if you’re ever in doubt, just ask someone at the store – they’re usually pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. Maybe I will share some other experiences about boxing in the future!
