Alright, let’s gab about this baseball and softball thing, which one’s harder to hit, you know? Folks say all sorts of things, but I’ve seen enough games in my days to have a good ol’ think about it.
First off, you got them fellas throwin’ that hard baseball. It’s a small ball, comes in real fast, like a bee stingin’ you before you even see it. They say some of them pitches are zippin’ in at 90 miles an hour! Mercy! That ain’t no joke! You blink, and you miss it. And that field, it’s big as a cow pasture, them fellas gotta run a country mile to get to first base.

Then you got them gals with the softball. Now, that ball’s bigger, looks like a big ol’ grapefruit, but don’t let that fool ya. Them gals throw it underhand, but it comes in all funky, movin’ and dippin’ like a crazy bird. And them pitchers ain’t slow either, they’re hurlin’ that thing at 70 miles an hour, which ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at. Plus, that field ain’t as big, so things happen real fast. You gotta be quicker than a cat on a hot tin roof.
- Pitch Speed: Baseball goes faster, yeah, but that softball has a mind of its own, movin’ all over the place.
- Field Size: Baseball field is bigger, more time to react, maybe. Softball field is smaller, everything’s gotta be faster.
- Ball Size: Baseball is small, hard to see. Softball is big, but that don’t mean it’s easier to hit, no sir.
Some smarty-pants fellas on TV, they did some tests and all, with their fancy machines and numbers. They figured out that even though the baseball is faster, you actually got less time to react to a softball pitch. Imagine that! It’s because that softball field is smaller, and that underhand pitch, it does funny things, comes at you from a different angle, you know? It ain’t a straight shot like that baseball.
And get this, they also said if that softball hits ya, it’s gonna hurt more than a baseball. That big ol’ ball spreads the hurt out more, I reckon. Like gettin’ smacked with a frying pan instead of a hammer, if you catch my drift. Both hurt like heck, but one’s gonna leave a bigger mark.
So, what’s harder to hit? Well, if you ask me, it ain’t just about how fast the ball goes. It’s about how much time you got to see it, swing at it, and not make a fool of yourself. With that baseball, you gotta be quick, but you got a little more time to see it comin’. With that softball, it’s all a blur, gotta swing fast and hope you hit somethin’ other than air.
Them fellas back in 1839, I think they made a game that’s hard no matter what, whether it’s baseball or softball. Folks been playin’ it ever since, and nobody’s figured out an easy way to hit that darn ball yet. You just gotta practice, practice, practice, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get lucky and smack one out of the park.
In my book, hitting that softball might just be a tad harder, because of all that sneaky movin’ and dippin’ and that short field. But shoot, both are tough, and anyone who can hit either one is alright in my book. You gotta have good eyes, quick hands, and a whole lot of grit, no matter which ball you’re swingin’ at.

And that’s all I gotta say about that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my tomato plants. They need waterin’ and talkin’ to, you know. That’s the real hard work, keeping them critters from eatin’ ’em all up.
Anyways, whether it’s baseball or softball, it’s all about havin’ fun and enjoyin’ the game. Just get out there, swing that bat, and don’t worry too much if you miss a few. Even the best of ’em strike out sometimes, that’s just part of the game, ain’t it?
So next time you’re watchin’ a game, or maybe even playin’ yourself, remember what I said. It ain’t just about speed, it’s about reaction time, and that sneaky softball might just be the trickier one to hit. But hey, that’s just my two cents, you can take it or leave it.
