Australian Rules Football vs American Football

Now, lemme tell ya, these two games, Australian Rules Football (AFL) and American Football (NFL), might both have “football” in the name, but they’re about as different as a kangaroo and a cowboy. Folks like to compare ’em, but once you look close, you’ll see just how different they really are.

Australian Rules Football vs American Football: Key Differences Explained

1. Field Size and Shape

Now, first off, where they play these games ain’t even close. Aussie Rules gets played on a huge, roundish field, sorta like a big ol’ cricket pitch, which can be up to 185 meters long and 155 meters wide. It’s like they need all that space ’cause they got 18 fellas runnin’ around on each side. It’s huge! Meanwhile, American Football’s all boxed in on a much smaller, rectangular field, only about 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. Looks more like a schoolyard compared to the Aussie field, if ya ask me.

2. Players on the Field

Now, talkin’ about players, AFL’s got a whole heap more. They got 18 players from each team on the field all at once, all runnin’ ’round tryin’ to kick that ball through them posts. American Football, on the other hand, only uses 11 players on each team at a time. Those NFL games got a lot of stoppin’ and startin’, so them players don’t run nearly as much as them Aussie blokes do. They get a rest after every single play, practically.

3. What They Wear

This is a big one, too! Aussie Rules players, well, they’re tough as nails. They just wear a sleeveless shirt and some shorts, like they’re goin’ to the beach or somethin’. No helmets, no big pads or nothin’. American Football players, though? Well, they’re all suited up in helmets, shoulder pads, and long pants. Looks more like armor than sportswear, but they do it ’cause American football is full of hard tackles. It’s like a bunch of bulls rammin’ into each other. Aussie players get tackled too, sure, but they ain’t wearin’ all that extra gear.

4. The Ball

Now, here’s somethin’ folks might not notice at first—the balls are different, too! American Footballs are a bit bigger, pointier, and made of leather, good for throwin’ and catchin’ with them spiral throws they do. The Aussie Rules ball is more round and easier to kick than throw. They go for goals by kickin’ the ball between these big goalposts, unlike in American football, where they gotta run the ball into the end zone or kick it through the posts for points. The different shape makes each ball suited for each type of game.

5. How the Game Is Played

The game playin’ style—now that’s the biggest difference you’ll notice. Aussie Rules? That game’s all about constant movement. They don’t stop every few seconds. Nope, it’s more like a big ol’ brawl where the ball’s just movin’ back and forth. They pass it by hand or kick it, and it’s always goin’. But American Football? That game stops every time someone’s tackled or the ball hits the ground. They plan out each play real careful, makin’ it more like a chess game if you squint hard enough.

6. Scoring

Scorin’ is a whole ‘nother story. In Aussie Rules, ya got four posts on each end, two big ones in the middle and two little ones on the outside. Kickin’ the ball through the middle posts gets ya six points, but if ya only make it through the side posts, that’s just one point. American Football, though, they’re all about touchdowns, where ya gotta run the ball to the end zone for six points. And if they’re feelin’ like addin’ more, they can try a field goal for three points or an extra point kick after a touchdown. It’s a bit trickier, if ya ask me.

7. Overall Game Style

When ya watch an AFL game, it’s like watchin’ a herd of sheep run wild. Everyone’s spread out, jumpin’, kickin’, bouncin’ that ball all over. There’s a bit of bumpin’ and tacklin’ too, but it’s nowhere near as controlled as American Football. American Football’s more planned and set in stone, where each play is like a little scene in a play they’ve practiced. The coaches and players talk it over every few minutes, makin’ sure everyone knows what to do next.

8. Time and Pace

Now, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ that moves quick, Aussie Rules might be more up your alley. They only stop for real short breaks, so the game goes on for around 80 minutes without much stoppin’. American Football games, on the other hand, are much slower, with all that stoppin’ after each play, meanin’ a game can go on for over three hours. Gives folks plenty of time to run to the snack bar and back, I reckon.

Which Game Is Tougher?

Now, if ya ask me, both of ’em are tough in their own way. Aussie Rules takes more endurance ’cause them players are constantly on the move, coverin’ more ground without stoppin’. American Football, though, it’s got that hard-hittin’ style, with all them tackles where folks are runnin’ full speed at each other. That’s why they wear all that gear. So, it kinda depends on whether you think nonstop runnin’ or intense hittin’ is tougher.

Conclusion

So there ya have it! Both games got their own style and their own kinda tough. Aussie Rules is for folks who like things fast and loose, with a big field and lots of runnin’. American Football’s for those who like strategy, heavy hits, and lots of team plannin’. Either way, both sports got folks who love ‘em to bits, and ain’t that what counts?
