This here Japan, they got all kinds of these sports, you know? Like that baseball thing. My grandson, he watches it all the time. Says it’s the biggest thing since sliced bread over there. Me, I don’t get it, but hey, whatever floats their boat, right?
But this boxing thing, is boxing popular in Japan? Now that’s something I seen on the TV once. Two fellas beatin’ the tar out of each other. Seems kinda popular, they say it came from over here in the west. We got our own way of fightin’ here, but I guess they like our way too.

They say baseball is their big one, the one everyone’s crazy about. Like our football, I reckon. Every town’s got a team, every kid wants to play. And them Japanese fellas, they even come over here and play in our big leagues! Imagine that! They are good, I gotta admit that. Good for them.
Now, they got this other thing, some kinda mix-up fighting. MMA, they call it. Sounds like a mess to me, but the young folks, they love it. Apparently, it’s been big in Japan for a long time, since way back when, the 1970s or something. They say Japan is real good at it, a “world power”, whatever that means.
I heard tell of a fight, way back, between one of our boxers, a fella named Muhammad Ali, a big name, you know? And some Japanese fighter. That was a big deal, they say. Maybe that’s how this whole thing got started over there. Is boxing popular in Japan? Well, it must be, if they had a big fight like that, right?
There’s two types of boxing, I reckon. The kind them pros do, in the big arenas, on the TV. And then the kind for the young’uns, just startin’ out. They call that “amateur” or somethin’. Some countries, like Cuba, that’s where the amateur boxing is real popular. I don’t know much about Cuba, though.
But that professional boxing, that’s the big money, I guess. That’s what everyone wants to see, all around the world. Japan too, probably. Even though they got all them other sports. Baseball, this MMA thing, and even that Sumo Wrestling.
Oh, that Sumo Wrestling! Now that’s somethin’ else. Big fellas, near naked, pushin’ each other around. They say it’s their national sport, all tied up with their religion and whatnot. Important stuff, I guess. I seen it on the TV. It’s… different.

So, is boxing popular in Japan? Well, seems like it is, kind of. Not as big as their baseball, maybe, or that Sumo stuff. But they like it enough, I reckon. They got their own fighters, and they watch the big fights from over here.
- Baseball is the top dog in Japan.
- That MMA fighting is real popular too, been that way for years.
- Boxing is in there somewhere, not the biggest, but folks know about it.
- Sumo Wrestling, that’s their own special thing, all wrapped up in tradition.
- Professional boxing is popular everywhere, must be in Japan too.
This one poll, from 2021, I think they said it was. It was sayin’ that this Sumo thing is the most popular combat sport over there in Japan. About 27 percent, that’s what they said. That is a lot of people, isn’t it?
They like their sports, these Japanese folks. Just like us, I guess. Different strokes for different folks, as they say. Whether it’s baseball, boxing, that MMA thing, or them big Sumo fellas, they got somethin’ for everyone.
Me, I’ll stick to my stories on the TV. But hey, if they like watchin’ folks punch each other, that’s their business. It takes all kinds, right? Is boxing popular in Japan? Yeah, I’d say it’s popular enough. Just another thing they do over there in that faraway land. That little island has many sports. They like sports just like us. Good for them, I say. Good for them.
I reckon they watch a lot of sports on that television thing. Just like us. My grandson, he’s always watching something. Baseball, basketball, football, even that there hockey with the ice. He’d probably watch boxing if I let him. Maybe I will someday. It could be fun to watch a boxing fight with him. I don’t know if I should. Is that too violent for a little boy like him?
But it is a popular sport. I know that for sure. They have it on TV all the time. So it must be popular in Japan, too. Those Japanese folks, they like all kinds of things. They’re just like us, in a way. They work hard, they play hard, and they like to watch their sports. And who can blame ’em? It’s good entertainment, I suppose. As long as nobody gets hurt too bad. That’s the main thing, ain’t it?
