Well, I heard about this poor boy, J.J. Roberts, playin’ football for Marshall University. He got himself hurt real bad, an’ it was all over the news around here. It happened durin’ the game against James Madison, right there at their home field. From what I can gather, he was just playin’ his heart out, runnin’ up and down the field with his teammates, when he got hurt in the fourth quarter. Now, this weren’t no little sprain or nothing, this was a serious deal. He had to be rushed to the hospital.
J.J. Roberts, he’s one of them young men from around here, a graduate from Cabell Midland High School. Folks round here know him well. His family, bless their hearts, said he’s out of the hospital now, but it’s still real touch and go. We all been prayin’ for him. Football’s a rough sport, no doubt, and I reckon sometimes them boys get more hurt than folks realize. Not just bumps and bruises, but real serious stuff. Like J.J. getting hit so hard that it took him down, like a sack of potatoes. Hurt his body bad enough that he had to leave the game, and they wasn’t sure he’d make it back that night. But thank goodness, he’s out the hospital. Let’s just hope he can heal up proper.

Now, Marshall’s football team, well, they been around for a long time. They’re what folks call the Thundering Herd, and they got a good long history of bein’ tough as nails. It’s a big ol’ university with a whole lotta pride. These boys ain’t just playin’ for fun, no sir, they’re playin’ for a future, representin’ the whole university. They been sendin’ players to the big leagues—the NFL—ever since they started draftin’ players back in 1936. Ain’t that somethin’? In fact, Marshall’s sent 283 players to the NFL, includin’ three who got picked in the first round, so you know that team’s serious business. But sometimes, even the toughest teams have to deal with injuries.
Now, I don’t know all the details of what happened with J.J. Roberts. I’m just a simple ol’ lady, but I’ve heard enough to know this ain’t no easy thing to come back from. The coach, Charles Huff, bless his heart, he ain’t said much about it either, just keepin’ things quiet. But that ain’t too surprising, these coaches, they like to keep things close to their chest. All I know is, J.J. is hurtin’, and we’re all hopin’ for the best.
But this ain’t the only injury Marshall’s team been dealin’ with. No sir, there’s Elijah Metcalf, too. He’s a wide receiver for the team, and I heard he hurt himself in a non-contact injury—ain’t that somethin’? You wouldn’t think someone could get hurt just runnin’ around without anybody even touchin’ ’em, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Elijah’s injury happened in the first half of another game, and folks are sayin’ he might miss some time this season. That’s a shame, ’cause the boy’s good, real good. Ain’t no tellin’ when he’ll be back, but all we can do is hope and pray he heals up.
Now, let me tell ya, football’s a tough sport, a dangerous sport. These boys, they get out there on that field, and they give it their all. They throw that ball, they catch it, they run like the wind, and they hit hard, real hard. But the injuries—well, they come with the territory. Ain’t no way around it. Every time they step out there, they put themselves at risk. Sometimes, it’s just a little knock, a sprain, or a bruise, but other times, it’s something worse. And that’s the part of football that scares me. It’s one of them sports where, as much as you love it, you can’t help but worry about what might happen next.
So, what happens now for Marshall’s team? Well, they got to keep on playin’, of course. Injuries are part of the game, but that don’t mean they ain’t gonna keep fightin’. Coach Huff’s gonna keep his team in line, and they’ll keep workin’ hard, doin’ their best, just like they always do. We all just gotta hope that J.J. Roberts and Elijah Metcalf come back stronger than ever. And as for the rest of the boys, well, they gotta keep pushin’, keep trainin’, and keep playin’ for the love of the game.
Football’s more than just a sport—it’s a part of the heart and soul of a lotta folks, especially here at Marshall University. The Thundering Herd ain’t just a team, they’re a family. And when one of ‘em gets hurt, well, we all feel it. We just hope the boys can heal up, get back on that field, and make us proud.
