Okay, so I’ve been trying to get back in shape, and I was thinking, “Hmm, maybe tennis?” I mean, it looks fun on TV, and you’re always hearing about how it’s a “full-body workout.” So, I decided to give it a shot and see if playing tennis is actually a good workout. Here’s how it went down.
Gearing Up
First things first, I needed some gear. I dug out an old racket from the garage – probably hadn’t seen the light of day in years. I also grabbed some sneakers. They weren’t exactly tennis shoes, but hey, they had some tread, right?

Finding a Court and a Partner
Next up, finding a place to play. Luckily, there’s a public park near my place with some tennis courts. I called up my buddy, Mark, who’s also trying to be a little less of a couch potato, and he was game.
Hitting the Court (and Missing a Lot)
We got to the courts, and man, it was a little embarrassing at first. I felt so clunky! We spent the first 10 minutes just trying to get the ball over the net. Lots of swings and misses. We were both huffing and puffing pretty quickly, I’m not gonna lie.
Getting into the Swing of Things
But then, something clicked. We started to get a little rhythm going. A few back-and-forths, some actual rallies! I was running side to side, chasing down balls, and even managed a couple of decent forehands (beginner’s luck, probably). It was, dare I say… fun?
The Sweat Factor
- Cardio: I was definitely breathing hard. All that running around, even if it wasn’t super graceful, got my heart rate up.
- Arms: Swinging the racket, even though it wasn’t that heavy, started to make my arm muscles burn a little.
- Legs: My legs were feeling it too! All that quick movement, stopping and starting, gave them a good workout.
The Aftermath
We played for about an hour, and by the end, I was drenched in sweat. My shirt was sticking to me, my legs were a bit wobbly, and I was definitely feeling it in my arms. But, surprisingly, I also felt…good. Kinda energized, even though I was tired. It was a “good tired,” you know?
My Verdict
So, is playing tennis a good workout? Based on my very scientific, one-time experiment, I’d say yes! Even at my super-beginner level, I got a decent sweat going, worked a bunch of different muscles, and, most importantly, had some fun doing it. I’m planning on making this a regular thing. My tennis skill is level one but my workout level up!
