Alright, guys, so the other day I had to clean the inside of my son’s football helmet. It was, uh, ripe, to say the least. He’d been sweating in that thing for weeks, and let me tell you, it was not a pretty sight (or smell!). So, I figured I’d share my little cleaning adventure with you all, in case you’re facing the same stinky situation.
Gathering My Supplies
First things first, I needed to get my cleaning arsenal together. I didn’t want to use anything too harsh that might damage the helmet or irritate my son’s skin. Here’s what I grabbed:

- Mild dish soap – the regular stuff, nothing fancy.
- Warm water – not scalding hot, just nice and warm.
- A couple of soft cloths – old T-shirts work great.
- An old toothbrush – for getting into those nooks and crannies.
- A spray bottle (optional)-filled with plain water.
The Cleaning Process
Okay, so here’s how I tackled this beast of a helmet:
- Disassemble (as much as possible). I took out all the removable padding. Luckily, most of it just snapped right out. This made cleaning way easier.
- Washing the Padding. I put some water in to a basin, added a squirt of dish soap, and dunked the * swished them around, squeezing out the dirt and sweat. For any stubborn spots, I used the old toothbrush to give them a little scrub.
- Rinse, Rinse, Rinse! Made sure I rinsed all the soapy water out of the pads with the spray. Didn’t want any residue left behind.
- Wipe Down the Shell. I used a damp cloth with a bit of soapy water to wipe down the inside of the helmet shell. Got into all the crevices and hard-to-reach spots. Again, the toothbrush came in handy here.
- Rinse the Shell. I used the spray bottle and a clean, damp cloth to rinse off any soap residue from the shell.
- Dry Everything Thoroughly. This is super important! I laid all the padding and the helmet shell out in a well-ventilated area to air dry. You can also use a fan to speed things up. Don’t put it away wet, or it’ll just get musty all over * I put them under the sun.
The Result
After a few hours of drying, everything was good as new! The helmet smelled fresh, the padding was clean, and I felt like a total cleaning superhero. My son was pretty happy too, which is always a * more stinky helmet complaints!
So, there you have it – my tried-and-true method for cleaning the inside of a football helmet. It’s not rocket science, but it definitely gets the job done. Hope this helps you tackle your own smelly helmet situation!
