So, I was watching this NASCAR race the other day, right? And it got me thinking – are these things actually automatic? I mean, you see them going so fast, but you don’t really see the drivers shifting gears all that much. So, I decided to do a little digging.
My Little Investigation
First, I hit up the internet, just to see what the general consensus was. I typed in “are NASCARs automatic” and started scrolling. Turns out, the answer is a big, fat NO.

I found out they are manual! They use a stick and everything.
- Manual all the way: Even with all the technology in these cars, they’ve stuck with manual transmissions.
- Shifting is minimal:It’s a new-ish design for cars, but not like a daily car. Drivers on a oval may not change the gears at all.
So there you have it. I went in wondering, dug around a bit, and came out with the answer. NASCARs are manual, plain and simple. I guess it just goes to show, sometimes the old-school way is still the way to go, even at 200 miles per hour!
