Alright, so the other day I was hanging out with my buddies, and we got into this massive debate about who the best dunker in the NBA is. I mean, it’s a classic argument, right? Everyone’s got their favorite, their reasons, their highlight reels ready to go. I figured, I love hoops, I love a good debate, why not try to settle this – or at least, get as close to settling it as possible – in my own way?
So, I started by hitting up YouTube. Seriously, that’s where any good investigation begins these days. I searched for “best NBA dunks,” “top 10 NBA dunks of all time,” “most insane NBA dunks,” you name it, I searched it. I spent, like, a solid two hours just watching dunks. My eyes were practically glued to the screen. I was seeing Vince Carter windmilling it from the free-throw line, Zach LaVine defying gravity, and Michael Jordan… well, being Michael Jordan.

Making My List
After the initial video binge, I decided I needed some structure. I couldn’t just say “this guy’s good, that guy’s good.” I needed criteria! So, I came up with a few categories:
- Power: How much force do they throw it down with?
- Creativity: How unique and inventive are their dunks?
- Consistency: Can they do it regularly, or was it a one-time fluke?
- In-Game Impact: Do they dunk in big moments, or just in blowouts?
With my categories in place, I started making a list of contenders. I mean, the obvious names were there: Vince Carter, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Blake Griffin, Shawn Kemp. But I also tried to think about some of the less-talked-about guys, like Spud Webb, who was, like, 5’7″ and throwing down monster jams. I thought about Jason Richardson, who was a dunk contest champion, but he didn’t get all the attention that the mega stars got. It’s all about digging deeper!
The Real Research Begins
The next step was to dig into some stats. I wanted to see how many dunks these guys actually had in their careers. I hit up some basketball stats websites. I started looking at things like dunks per game, dunks per season, and even the percentage of their shots that were dunks. It’s kind of cool how much info is out there if you just look for it.
I also went back to YouTube, but this time, I was more focused. I wasn’t just watching highlight reels; I was watching full games. I wanted to see these dunks in context. Were they happening against tough defenders? Were they momentum-shifting plays? Were they just showboating in garbage time? It’s a whole different thing to see a dunk in a highlight package versus seeing it happen live, in the flow of a game.
My (Subjective) Conclusion
After all this “research” (let’s be real, it was mostly me watching a ton of awesome basketball), I came to my own totally subjective, completely biased conclusion. And look, it’s still tough! How do you compare Vince Carter’s insane creativity to the sheer power of a young Shaq? Or the athleticism of a young LeBron to the grace of Michael Jordan? It’s almost impossible!
For me, though, after all of this, I still gotta give the edge to Vince Carter. His 360 windmill, the “honey dip,” the dunk over Frederic Weis in the Olympics… it’s just on another level. But hey, that’s just me. That’s what makes these debates so fun – everyone’s got their own opinion, and there’s no real right answer. It’s all about who you enjoy watching the most. So, tell me who you think is best dunker, and let me know your thoughts! I would like to hear what you think!
