Okay, so the other day, I was watching a football game, and I kept hearing the commentators talk about this “draw play” thing. I had no clue what they were talking about. So, I thought, I gotta figure this out. Time to do some digging!
First, I hit up the internet, you know, the usual. Typed in “what is a draw play in football” and started reading through some articles and watching a few videos. It took a bit to wrap my head around it, but basically, it’s like this trick play in football.

The whole point of a draw play is to fool the other team. You make it look like you’re gonna pass the ball, but surprise! You actually hand it off to a running back. It’s like the opposite of when you pretend to run but then throw the ball.
So, here’s how it goes down. The quarterback, that’s the guy who throws the ball, he drops back like he’s gonna pass. The offensive line, those big dudes in front, they act like they’re blocking for a pass too. This makes the defense think, “Oh, they’re gonna pass!” and they start getting ready to stop the pass.
The Steps
- Pretend: Everyone on offense acts like it is a pass play.
- Wait: The quarterback holds the ball a little longer.
- Surprise: He hands the ball to the running back.
- Run: The running back tries to run as far as he can.
But then, bam! The quarterback quickly gives the ball to the running back, who’s been chilling there, waiting for his moment. Now, because the defense was all focused on stopping a pass, the running back has a better chance to run through them and get some yards.
I watched a bunch of videos of these plays in action, and it’s pretty cool when it works out. Sometimes the running back can get a huge gain because the defense was totally caught off guard. But if the defense figures it out, the running back can get tackled for a loss. It is a gamble!
After doing all this research, I finally got it. A draw play is basically a trick, a way to surprise the other team and hopefully get a big play. I even tried to explain it to my buddy who also watches football, and I think he got it too. It is not that hard when you get into it. Football can seem complex, but once you start to learn some of these things, it all starts making a lot more sense. Next game, I am going to watch like a hawk to see how often they use these draw plays!
